About AirStatus

AirStatus is an independent real-time airspace monitoring service. We translate raw aviation data (ground stops, ground delay programs, ATC outages, and NOTAM advisories) into plain English, so passengers and aviation enthusiasts can understand what is actually happening at any major airport right now.

Our Mission

Plain English. No jargon.

Aviation data is technical by design. It is written for pilots and air traffic controllers, not passengers. AirStatus bridges that gap. We parse the raw feeds, interpret the codes, and present what matters: is your airport affected, how bad is it, and what are your rights?

Who Built This

A frequent flyer frustrated by bad data

AirStatus was built by Soleman Gelawi, a developer and frequent traveller based in the UK. The idea came from a personal experience: sitting at an airport during a NATS restriction with no clear information about what was happening, how long it would last, or what rights applied. Every official source used aviation jargon. No passenger-facing tool existed that simply translated the raw data into plain English.

The FAA publishes its NAS Status data openly in real time — one of the most transparent aviation data feeds in the world. NATS publishes public NOTAMs via its PIB feed. The Aviation Weather Center provides global NOTAM data without charge. All the raw material was there. It just needed someone to turn it into something passengers could actually use.

AirStatus is built with Next.js, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS, hosted on Vercel with Cloudflare CDN in front and Supabase for disruption history. It is maintained as an independent project — no VC funding, no corporate agenda, just a tool that should exist.

Data Sources

United Kingdom

NATS PIB

24 airports

UK NOTAM publication feed from NATS, covering ATC outages, airport closures, ground stops, and airspace restrictions across all major UK airports.

United States

FAA NAS Status

30 airports

FAA National Airspace System real-time XML feed, covering ground stops, ground delay programs, arrival/departure delays, and airspace flow control programs.

Europe

Aviation Weather Center NOTAM API

27 airports

EU airport NOTAMs sourced from the public Aviation Weather Center API, covering airport closures, ATC outages, ground stops, and airspace restrictions across European airports. Same coverage level as the UK NATS feed.

How It Works

STEP 01

Poll

Every 15 minutes, AirStatus fetches live data from the FAA NAS API, NATS PIB feed, and EUROCONTROL sources.

STEP 02

Classify

Raw advisories are parsed and classified into plain-English categories: Ground Stop, GDP, Delays, ATC Outage, Flow Control.

STEP 03

Cache

Results are written to Redis for sub-second serving and to Supabase for the disruption history archive.

STEP 04

Serve

Status pages are updated instantly. Users always see data no older than 15 minutes, with each page noting when it was last refreshed.

Independence

Not affiliated with any airline or airport

AirStatus is an independent project. We have no relationship with any airline, airport, or aviation authority. Our data comes directly from official public feeds - the same sources used by aviation professionals. We do not receive payment from any of these organisations to display their data.

Some pages contain affiliate links to passenger rights services (AirHelp) and airport transfer providers (Kiwitaxi). These are clearly labelled. We only include affiliates we consider genuinely useful to passengers dealing with disruptions.

Passenger Rights

UK261, EU261 & US DOT

We publish plain-English summaries of passenger rights under UK261, EU Regulation 261/2004, and US DOT rules. This information is for general guidance only and is not legal advice. Always confirm your specific situation with your airline or a qualified legal adviser.
